The Ultimate Tire Changer Buying Guide

How to Choose the Right Tire Changer for Your Shop

Purchasing a tire changer is one of the most important equipment investments an automotive shop can make. The right machine can improve technician productivity, reduce wheel damage, and handle today's increasingly challenging low-profile and run-flat tires. The wrong machine can slow technicians down and become obsolete as wheel technology evolves.

Whether you're considering a Hunter, Corghi, Coats, RockSolid, Ranger, Atlas, or another manufacturer, understanding the major design differences will help you select the best machine for your business.

Step 1: Determine Your Shop Type

Before comparing brands, ask yourself:

  • How many tires do you change each day?
  • Do you service luxury vehicles?
  • Do you regularly work on run-flat tires?
  • Will technicians with varying experience operate the machine?
  • Is minimizing wheel damage a priority?

A shop changing 10 passenger tires per day has very different needs than a dealership or tire retailer changing 80+ assemblies daily.

Rim Clamp vs. Center Clamp Tire Changers

One of the biggest differences between premium tire changers is how the wheel is secured.

Rim Clamp Tire Changers

Examples include many machines from:

  • Coats
  • Ranger
  • Atlas
  • RockSolid
  • Hunter
  • Corghi

These machines clamp the wheel from the inside or outside of the rim using four jaws.

Advantages

  • Lower purchase price
  • Faster wheel loading (especially on reverse-drop center wheels)
  • Familiar operation
  • Excellent for general repair shops
  • Large selection of models available

Disadvantages

  • Potential for cosmetic wheel damage if used improperly
  • Less ideal for delicate painted or forged wheels
  • Requires proper jaw protection and technician training

For most independent repair shops, a quality rim clamp machine offers the best balance of cost and capability.

Center Clamp Tire Changers

Center clamp machines secure the wheel through the hub rather than the rim.

Popular examples include premium models from Corghi, RockSolid and Hunter.

Advantages

  • No contact with wheel lips
  • Excellent protection for expensive wheels
  • Extremely secure clamping
  • Preferred by many luxury dealerships

Disadvantages

  • Higher purchase price
  • Slower setup
  • More operator training required
  • Additional adapters may be necessary

Center clamp machines excel in environments servicing high-end European vehicles, performance wheels, or customers who demand maximum cosmetic protection.

Leverless vs. Traditional Mount Head

The biggest innovation in tire changers over the last decade has been the move toward leverless technology.

Traditional Mount/Demount Head

Traditional machines use a duckhead and tire iron to mount and remove tires.

Advantages include:

  • Lower purchase cost
  • Simple maintenance
  • Easy technician training
  • Proven reliability

However, the operator must manually work the bead over the mount head using a pry bar.

This process can increase physical effort and raises the possibility of wheel damage if performed incorrectly.

Leverless Tire Changers

Leverless machines eliminate the need for tire irons during most tire changes.

Examples include:

  • Corghi Artiglio and Master series - Corghi master is the only head that never touches the rim. Other leverless machines still rely on plastic protection or plastic sleds that potentially ride along the lip of the rim during the changing process.
  • Hunter Revolution and Maverick series
  • RockSolid RSC8655 Leverless Pro or RSC8697

Advantages include:

  • Faster operation
  • Reduced technician fatigue
  • Less chance of wheel damage
  • Easier handling of run-flat and ultra-low-profile tires
  • Improved consistency between technicians

The downside is increased purchase price and mechanical complexity.

For shops changing a high volume of difficult tires, leverless technology often delivers an excellent return on investment through increased productivity.

Turntable Speed Matters

Not all tire changers rotate at the same speed. Part of the advantage is speed, but a big part of it is also torque. Higher speed turntables typically have more strength to turn heavy-ply tires, 19.5s, or other medium duty assemblies.

Single-Speed Turntables

Common on entry-level machines.

Advantages:

  • Lower cost
  • Simple operation
  • Reliable

Disadvantages:

  • Slower cycle times
  • Limited flexibility

Ideal for lower-volume shops.

Two-Speed Turntables

Common on mid-range machines.

Advantages:

  • Faster mounting
  • Better control
  • Increased productivity

Many professional shops consider two-speed machines the minimum standard today.

Variable-Speed Turntables

Premium tire changers now offer infinitely adjustable rotation speed using inverter drives or servo motors.

Advantages include:

  • Maximum control
  • Better handling of difficult assemblies
  • Reduced risk of tire or wheel damage
  • Improved precision

Variable-speed systems are especially valuable when servicing expensive wheels or stiff run-flat tires.

Bead Breaking Systems

Removing the tire bead is often the most physically demanding part of the process.

Different manufacturers approach this differently.

Traditional Bead Breaking Shovel

The most common design.

Used by many manufacturers including:

  • RockSolid
  • Coats
  • Ranger
  • Atlas

Advantages:

  • Simple
  • Reliable
  • Powerful
  • Easy to service

For most shops, a traditional shovel provides excellent performance. The size of the air cylinder can be quite large so the strength is good on a side-shovel bead breaker but it is much more likely to damage a rim and/or a tire.

Roller Bead Breakers

Premium machines from companies like Corghi RockSolid and Hunter often incorporate powered roller systems.

Advantages:

  • Less stress on tires
  • Easier on difficult run-flats
  • Reduced technician effort
  • More controlled bead separation

Roller systems significantly improve ergonomics but generally increase purchase cost. The strongest and smoothest bead breaker rollers would be on the Hunter Revolution, Hunter Maverick, and Corghi MasterForce. These are hydraulically powered bead beakers compared to most roller-breakers that are powered with pneumatic (air-cylinders) air can be compressed so they are not as strong or precise as hydraulic systems

Which Features Matter Most?

When comparing machines, prioritize:

  • Ability to service run-flat tires
  • Maximum wheel diameter
  • Maximum wheel width
  • Turntable torque
  • Mounting speed
  • Wheel protection
  • Ease of maintenance
  • Local parts availability
  • Service support
  • Warranty

The best tire changer isn't necessarily the most expensive—it's the one that matches your shop's workload and the types of vehicles you service every day.

Final Thoughts

For many independent repair shops, a quality rim clamp, two-speed tire changer offers the best balance of price and capability.

High-volume tire retailers and dealerships may benefit from investing in leverless technology, variable-speed turntables, and roller bead-breaking systems, especially when servicing larger wheels, low-profile tires, and premium vehicles.

Regardless of the brand you choose, proper training, routine maintenance, and reliable local support are just as important as the machine itself. A well-supported tire changer can provide years of dependable service while improving technician productivity and reducing the risk of wheel damage.
